The Media Center is located near the multipurpose room/gym and the cafeteria. There is seating and tables for 32 students and there are 28 computer stations. This makes for a wonderful world of learning using books and the web for research. K-5th graders come to Media on a weekly basis.
We want to help our students become life long readers, therefore lifelong learners. As you know, if students can't read well, learning suffers and not just in language arts. Math, science, social studies, or other subjects can not be mastered until students learn to read successfully. Parents can help our students succeed in school by encouraging them to read more at home and by taking turns reading aloud with their child. If families can incorporate partner reading into their daily lives, the results would be increased literacy skills and test scores that soar in reading.
Classes are taught in the Media Center that include reading, writing, understanding genre, the dewey decimal system, and computer research skills. Students often are asked to connect their reading and writing with oral reports.
The total collection of books is 9,903. The average age of our collection is 2003. The 500s (Science Section) is the largest area of books with picture books and fiction titles being second and third. The collection of magazines we subscribe are quite popular, especially Sports Illustrated for Kids and National Geographic Kids Discover.
Students are asked to be responsible library users as they check out books. Other students are waiting to read the book they have out, so we ask that they be returned in a timely manner. Late fees are not charged, but there is a cost for lost or damaged books that need to be collected so that more books can be purchased.
Behavior expectations are posted. They are the same as in the classroom, following the " Morehead STEM 6." Students are asked to stay focused on their "job" until completion. I tell them the "job" they are doing does not pay them in monetary value at this time, but it will later. If a student has difficulity working at their table, they are asked to move to a more private area where they will be more productive and not easily distracted.
Stop by to meet Mrs. Alwran.
